An Album/Song A Week: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana

There are certain songs that jump out of whatever your listening device is and pronounce themselves as unstoppable.  The first time I hard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a couple of weeks before Nevermind was released.  It was undeniable.  Once MTV got hold of the video, it took off. No, I didn't know what Kurt Cobain was singing about after a few listens.  That came later.  Who knows what would have happened to Cobain had he lived.  With Nevermind he proved himself a master craftsman of hook-filled alt-rock.  By the time of their last album, 1993's In Utero, the music wasn't as commercial, as if Cobain was already rebelling against the top of the charts.  But that album was still filled with many ideas way ahead of whatever any other rock band at the time was doing.

Recently I was watching MTV Classic, and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video came on.  I hadn't made the time to watch it in years.  But I still got a rush out of the whole song/video.  If only Cobain could have overcome the demons in his head.  Who knows what he had in him?
