Voting In Critic's Polls

There seems to be a tug of war that keeps growing every year between the Old School music critics and the Pitchfork generation of music critics.  It got played out more so in the 2013 Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll then in any other year.  The number of voters is down, but that could be because the first generation of critics no longer votes.

I've been voting since the early 2000's, but tried to get ballots before then.  It wasn't until the Internet came along that I was able to send an email request for a ballot.  I often feel like my ballot is too populist.  Not enough obscure titles, even though I hear plenty of those.

I'm somewhere between the older and newer generation of music critics.  And the advent of blogging has been able to get my opinions out there, where I never had a chance with print.  I feel no shame in calling myself a child of the online world of music critics.  I've done my research into music history and continue to keep up with the past and present.

But it bothers some that every blogger is now a critic.  I don't know how long Pazz & Jop will continue.  Why shouldn't it?  People have been saying it's going away every year, and it doesn't.  I usually don't agree with most of what finishes near the top anyway.  But I'm going to continue to cast a ballot as long as its around.

Beatles

The first Beatles song I remember hearing was "We Can Work It Out", which would make me a 1 1/2 at the time.  My sister who is 5 years older than me caught the fever.  I also remember her playing "Eight Days A Week"  all the time.  Oh, and she played the Beatles '65 and Yesterday and Today (66) all the time.  By the way, when I tell people that my sister got rid of the Butcher cover album  at a garage sale years ago, I still get gasps of exasperation.  I swear I didn't know.

Although we are an Elvis Presley family, we also loved the Beatles.  But by the time the Beatles hit, the young girls had moved on, and they came at the perfect time.  The young kids who screamed for Elvis were now young adults.  And had moved on to other types of music.  Luckily, Elvis survived his movie phase and made his '68 Comeback and got back a lot of the fans that had deserted him.

I should also mention that the first Beatles album I bought by myself was in 1977, Live at the Hollywood Bowl, which has never been released digitally.   It's one of the few vinyl's I still have left.
So, 50 years later the music is timeless.  There are still people, even musicians, who don't like the Beatles.  The same with Elvis.  But those are the minority.  For the rest of us, the early fever still rises on occasions.  Like this year.

Dad, 6 Years Later

Time goes by too fast.  It seems like only yesterday.   If you've lost a family member or just someone you love, then you know how you never forget them.  Every day.  Sometimes more than a few times a day they will come to you in some way.
That's how it is with my Dad.  Such a strong presence.  But always good memories.

Bruno Mars & Selling Out

Have to laugh at the rock it's who won't give Bruno Mars his due. He's a showman, for sure, but he knows how to write a good song.  He certainly didn't need the Chili Peppers.  I'm not a big fan, but I can see why they were there. To give Rock fans someone to hold on to.
Living in the past is all well and fine when it comes to your musical tastes, but keep your opinions to yourself if you can't embrace what's out there today. I hope the grumpy old man syndrome never gets me. I'm on the cusp of 50, and keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh, and selling out. Dylan did that in 2004 with a Victoria's Secret commercial. Remember this, musicians have been seeping out forever.  Name your fave: Elvis, Beatles, Stones, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Neil Young.
