Music Years Of My Life: 1972

My third grade teacher in Germany had us sing songs.  Most of the ones, from what I remember, were the usual harmless children ditties.  But one day she had us do "Song Sung Blue", Neil Diamond's often derided #1 hit from 1972.  Now, I can't recall if we sang any other hits from '72/'73, but I can't forget this one.  The thing I remember about singing this is that I knew the song.  It was a hit, and got played on the radio.

Let's face it, "Song Sung Blue" isn't that hard to sing along with.  Diamond, as the 70's moved on, was leaving behind his catchy, uptempo Pop hits in favor of more introspective songs.  This song isn't one of them, but it still brings back a good memory whenever I hear it.  This is probably the only time that one of my Elementary school teachers had us sing something that was a hit of the day.  But I have been in classes where the teacher would have the radio on in the background.  I even had one in 1976/'77 who had a turntable and would spin hit singles.   Every little thing that planted my future musical obsessions.

Personal Picks: 2023 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

Below are my Personal picks, listed in alphabetical order.  Most of the 14 nominees could get a "Yes" vote from me in other years.

Only able to vote for 5, which has always been an impossible task.  The Hall inducted 8 names from the ballot last year, taking Judas Priest from the Performer category to the Musical Excellence one.  In 2021 they inducted seven. Six performers plus taking LL Cool J off the ballot into the Musical Excellence category. So, I'm picking the five I would vote for plus 2 bonus choices.

With each of my picks, I recommend some of their best recordings.

Again, these are my Personal picks, not predictions.

Top 5
George Michael - A superb craftsman who was comfortable singing many genres. First nomination.

1. Faith
2. Make It Big (Wham)
3. Ladies & Gentleman-Best of

Sheryl Crow - One of the best singer-songwriters of her generation.  First nomination.

1. Tuesday Night Music Club
2. Sheryl Crow - s/t
3. Very Best of

Spinners - One of the greatest Philly Soul groups who released some of the 70's most perfectly sung records. Plus, a legendary live act. Sound like game changers to me.  4th nomination.

1.  Spinners - s/t
2.  Pick of the Litter
3.  Very Best of

Warren Zevon - Premiere LA singer/songwriter whose best work combines humor, tenderness and wicked honesty on many topics.  First nomination.

1.  Warren Zevon - s/t
2.  Excitable Boy
3.  Genius: Best of

Willie Nelson - The face of Outlaw Country, a genre which attracted numerous Rock fans. First nomination.

1.  Red Headed Stranger
2.  Stardust
3.  Legend: Best of

Bonus picks

Cyndi Lauper - An empowering, inspirational voice who inspired many followers.  First nomination.

1. She's So Unusual
2. Kinky Boots (Original Broadway Cast Recording)
3. Essential

White Stripes Jack & Meg White blended Blues and Garage Rock into their own original sound for the 21st Century. First nomination (first year eligible).

1.  White Blood Cells
2.  Elephant
3.  Greatest Hits

The Rest

A Tribe Called Quest - If the gangsta rap of the 90's turned you off, then this group, along with De La Soul, was one of the acts to champion.  Cool samples, smart lyrics.   2nd nomination.

Iron Maiden - Long running Metal legends with a massively loyal following.  2nd nomination.

Joy Division/New Order -  JD's sound was a departure from every band of their era.  JD's former members founded NO and took their sound to the 80's dance floor.   First nomination for both.

Kate Bush - Bush's catalog dating back to the late 70's has only grown in stature. Even if she's better known in England than in the U.S.  4th nomination.

Missy Elliott - One of the biggest rap stars of the late 90's/early 00's.  An inspiration to every female rapper that followed her. First nomination (first year eligible).

Rage Against the Machine - Not a fan. Am I the only one who likes Morello’s solo stuff better? 5th nomination.

Soundgarden - The most classic rock/metal sounding of the grunge era bands.  Chris Cornell's vocals always separated them from the rest of that era's vocalists.  2nd nomination.

Side Categories
Here are some personal picks for the side categories:

Musical Excellence - Chaka Khan, Carol Kaye, Roberta Flack
Early Influence - Carter Family, Patsy Cline, DJ Kool Herc
Non- Performer - Thom Bell, Estelle Axton

Music Years Of My Life: 1971

In the Summer of '71, my Dad got stationed in Mannheim, Germany.  There's not much from the latter part of that year that musically stuck out, outside of the hits from Carole King's Tapestry.  But the first half of the year was very similar to what occurred in 1970.  Suddenly, songs were sticking with me longer, and those that did are still with me today.

The three that bring back my young school days in North Carolina were all car ride staples:  Three Dog Night's "Joy To The World", Donny Osmond's "Sweet and Innocent", and Brewer & Shipley's "One Toke Over The Line".  No, I had no idea what that latter song was about at the age of 7, but it was catchy.  Donny Osmond was part of the early 70's teen idol boom that my sister embraced.  And the Three Dog Night were already one of the early 70's best singles bands.

People say time flies as you get older, and I can attest to that.  When you're a child the days appear to last longer, memories start forming and friendships come and go.  All of this is true, and the best part was that my ensuing infatuation with music was sown in years like 1970 & 1971.

The move to Germany, and leaving friends behind, had one musical silver lining.  In Germany is where I heard my first American Top 40 countdown.  A life turning point at 7 years old!

Tom's Favorite Singers of All Time

Updated March 2024

"What mattered most to us was originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy".  This is one of the ways Rolling Stone describes their rankings of the 200 Greatest Singers Of All Time. The first time they've updated their list in 15 years.  I look at their explanation and then laugh that Elvis Presley ended up at #17 on this updated list.  In 2008 he was #3, behind Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan.

But that's how it is with lists like this.  Rolling Stone knows what they are doing.  Controversy creates web clicks.  And their lists create traffic.  As usual there are puzzling omissions like Celine Dion and Dionne Warwick.  Puzzling inclusions, mostly near the bottom of the list. RS lists are a world in which Gladys Knight is ranked behind Toni Braxton. I’m not saying Braxton is not a great singer. But a more influential vocalist than Gladys? There were nice surprises like El DeBarge, Sylvester, Patty Loveless, Charlie Rich and Russell Thompkins, Jr.  In the end it wasn't the artists included that rankled many but the rankings themselves.  Just not their rankings. After listing my own favorite singers, I actually sympathize with Rolling Stone's undertaking. If it was was impossible for me to stop at 200 names, imagine what it was like for them?  So in the end, I just kept going with an unranked list that may go on forever.

My favorite singers list would be very different than yours. Rolling Stone has attempted an all-genre list, save for Opera.  Which is why there are so many notable omissions, even when listing 200 singers. My own list is very similar.  However I must say that my list is poor on World Music singers.  I know many of the names in those genres, but not enough to populate a list with them.

To save my brain from exploding, I'm also presenting an unranked list.  And I'm also not limiting myself to a set number.  It's going to be a running list of great voices that will be added on forever. But for the record my Top 3 singers are Elvis, Aretha and Sam Cooke.

What defines a great singer to me?  I agree with RS that originality and influence matter.  Also, a distinctive voice that is easy recognizable the moment you hear it.

Below is an A-Z listing of my favorite singers of all time.

25th Anniversary of My Blog

March 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of this blog.  My first posts began in March 1998 at the dawn of the blogosphere. Back then my blog was titled Tom Lane's Music Page.  I eventually changed it after a few years. My early posts were mostly lists and quick posts on what was happening in the music world.  Plus many Rock Hall posts.  I'm sure I wasn't the first to blog about the Rock Hall, but I have to be near the top.  Until I started my blog there was a forum on the Rock Hall page where many future Rock Hall watchers hung out.  There were other music forums that I frequented.  Just about all faded out by the 2000's.
Up until I joined Blogger in 2005, my blog was on different blogging hosting sites.  All of those shut down which prompted me to join Blogger.  I think my posts got better as the years went on.  I was still heavily posting on the Rock Hall.  I don't do that as much anymore because a new generation of Hall bloggers came along.  And my blog has never solely been about music.  Personal posts, political and whatever else is on my mind occasionally shows up.  But for the most part it is indeed a Music Blog.
Since 1998 I've never thought once to stop blogging.  I don't post daily, but when I do finish a post, I'm always glad to share it with whoever stops by my page.

I hope my loyal readers have enjoyed the ride.  Here's to another 25 years.
