An Album/Song A Week - "Both Sides Now" - Judy Collins

Recorded in 1967, but not released as a single until October 1968, "Both Sides Now" was not only Judy Collins' biggest hit (#8), but the song that introduced its writer, Joni Mitchell, to a larger audience.  Mitchell was indifferent to Collins' version, once calling it decades ago as "pretty lightweight".  But Collins's recording is better than both of Mitchell's versions.  Mitchell did an acoustic take in 1969 and a better orchestral one in 2003.  But Collins' is made for the Pop charts.  And the song is better for it.

I was all of 4 when Collins' version came out, but I remember it today as being one of the first songs I've ever heard.  Of course I had no idea what it was about at that age, but it was the music that caught my young ears.  Hearing it again I'm taking back to the late 60's, and an innocent age for me but not for the U.S. Joni Mitchell was in her early 20's when she wrote "Both Sides Now".  And the maturity in the her lyrics would be a hallmark that she would only sharpen.  It would be a long time before those words got through to me as I got older.

20 Years of the Ipod

I wrote the below post in September 2014, when Apple announced it was discontinuing the Ipod Classic. On October 23, 2001, the first Ipod was released.  Twenty years later I still have mine and it works like brand new.  I also have 2 other Ipod models that were released later.  I was wrong about one thing in my original post, Apple is still making the Ipod Touch.  And you can find all kinds of past models online.  But nothing beats the thrill of loading up that original Ipod, hitting shuffle (which was the #1 draw for me and others), making playlists, hitting the play button and getting hours of my favorite songs commercial free.

Apple announced 2 weeks ago it was discontinuing the Ipod Classic.  I still have mine.  A 20GB one that holds just under 4000 songs.  What I have on it are the cream of my music collection.  In other words, the best Elvis Presley songs, not all Elvis Presley songs.

But while I still played the Ipod, I didn't use it as often.  In fact, I rarely took any songs off it.  The last time I made a major change on it was 3 years ago.  So, I'll probably have to get a Nano or Touch to add all the good songs that I've missed in the last 3 years.

The Ipod came out in October 2001, and I think I bought mine for Christmas.  Remember the Ipod Mini?  Yeah, I had one of those as well, but sold it years ago.  With Iphones able to do what the Ipod could do, Apple didn't see a need to keep it around.

Eventually, they'll close down all things Ipod. But I'll never get rid of mine.  It's still a thrill to hit the old Shuffle Songs option and be amazed at what's going to come up.  That's what made the Ipod the legend it was.  Some people made Playlists, but I never did.  It was all about the Shuffle.

There were some sad posts about the death of the IClassic.  But mine is still alive.  Still handy whenever I need a fix.  4000 songs strong.  Just waitin' to be shuffled.

An Album/Song A Week: Randy Travis - Storms Of Life

Randy Travis had been bubbling under the Nashville establishment before he broke big in 1986.  In fact, the first single from Storms of Life tanked when it was first released in 1985, "On The Other Hand". But after another single, "1982" went to #6, it was re-released and became his first #1 hit.  Travis wasn't the first Country act to embrace the new New Traditionalist sound that Nashville began embracing in the early 80's.  Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, the Judds and John Anderson were already there.  But as a vocalist in the style of Merle Haggard and Lefty Frizzell he was definitely its biggest star.

Storms of Life was the best Country album of the first part of the 80's.  Not a loser in its 10 songs.  So good that one of its standouts, the Travis-penned "Reasons I Cheat", wasn't even released as a single.  It would go on to include another #1 with "Diggin' Up Bones", and another #2 in "No Place Like Home".

While I always loved Country music and by 1986 owned quite a few, this was the album that put me over the top in really following the genres albums and not just singles. Travis would go on to have a Hall of Fame career.  One of the best stylists Country music ever produced.  Vocally he stood with his idols.

An Album/Song A Week: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - Nirvana

There are certain songs that jump out of whatever your listening device is and pronounce themselves as unstoppable.  The first time I hard "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was a couple of weeks before Nevermind was released.  It was undeniable.  Once MTV got hold of the video, it took off. No, I didn't know what Kurt Cobain was singing about after a few listens.  That came later.  Who knows what would have happened to Cobain had he lived.  With Nevermind he proved himself a master craftsman of hook-filled alt-rock.  By the time of their last album, 1993's In Utero, the music wasn't as commercial, as if Cobain was already rebelling against the top of the charts.  But that album was still filled with many ideas way ahead of whatever any other rock band at the time was doing.

Recently I was watching MTV Classic, and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video came on.  I hadn't made the time to watch it in years.  But I still got a rush out of the whole song/video.  If only Cobain could have overcome the demons in his head.  Who knows what he had in him?

An Album/Song A Week: Janet Jackson - Control

Janet Jackson was only 20 years old when she released her breakthrough album, Control. Before its release she had put out 2 mostly-negligible albums of R&B/Dance-Pop.  So, no one was expecting this kind of artistic leap, based on her previous work.  I maintain that Control is the best statement on artistic and personal independence ever made.

Janet's secret weapon in turning Control into a classic were former Time members, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. They had achieved their first success as Producers/Songwriters in 1982 with the SOS Band.  And leading up to working with Jackson they had already scored a bunch of R&B hits.  But crossover hits proved elusive until "Tender Love" went Top 10 in 1985 by the Force M.D.'s.

Jam & Lewis took Prince's Minneapolis Sound and added more R&B to the mix.  In Janet Jackson they found the perfect artist at the perfect moment.  Janet wanted to shed her teen years and Jam & Lewis looking for more crossover success.  Seven of the 9 songs were written by the trio. And while all the songs touch on either failed relationships or the joy of a new one, they are all told with a new found maturity. On the title track, Janet lays it all out in her own personal statement.

Control turned out to be the breakthrough everyone had in mind.  And Jam & Lewis/Janet Jackson would go on to make more great albums.  But Control remains my favorite.
