Lou Reed
Is curmudgeon too nice a word to describe Lou Reed? Prickly is another one. Not many other musicians hated music journalists as much as Reed. Go Google some of his interviews and I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about.
But about the music. All 4 of the Velvet Underground's albums are essential. His solo career was more hit and miss which is usually the case when you record too many albums. The best from all the ones I've heard, and looking over his discography I didn't miss much: Transformer, New York, Blue Mask, maybe Coney Island Baby. It's a decent solo catalog, even if it never reached the VU heights.
Reed was twice nominated for the Rock Hall as a solo artist, but the last one came in 2001. Death may bring him back to the ballot, never can tell, but it seems the NomCom forgot about him or didn't think his solo work was worthy.
Velvet Underground were inducted in 1996.
